COVINGTON T.K. Adams Sr. and Louise Adams will be inducted into the Newton County School Systems Educator Hall of Fame on Nov. 13.

The two will be the first inductees into the new Hall of Fame, and Samantha Fuhrey, superintendent of schools for the Newton County School System, said she could not think of two better individuals for the first class.

Mr. and Mrs. Adams are stalwarts of the community and have truly impacted our school system in a positive way, Fuhrey said in a press release. It will be a true pleasure to officially induct them into the NCSS Educator Hall of Fame as they are so deserving of the recognition.

T.K. Adams Sr. served as the band director at Cousins Middle School for 36 years. During that period of time, he was a four-time Teacher of the Year. In summer 1966, Adams earned recognition when 10 of his students went on a tour of Europe with the school band and chorus of America.

For over 25 years, Adams spent his summers as director of woodwinds at summer camps around Georgia and is in demand as a clinician and adjudicator.

Adams was a member of a number of educational organizations, such as the Newton County Association of Educators, the National Association of Educators, the Georgia Association of Educators, and the Georgia Music Educators Association.

He also served on a number of organizations local to the Newton County area, such as the Newton County Community Council, the board of directors of the YMCA of Covington, the Arts Association in Newton County, the Gaithers Plantation Committee, and the Kiwanis Club of Covington.

In addition, Adams founded the Newton County Community Band in 1993 and served as director for a number of years.

His wife, Louise Adams, is a retired principal from Ficquett Elementary School and served as a teacher at Cousins Middle and elementary schools, where she was elected Teacher of the Year. She taught seventh- and eighth-grade reading at Old Porterdale and was a reading specialist at New Porterdale before becoming a reading teacher at Cousins Junior High.

Louise also served on a number of local organizations and community groups benefiting the Newton County area, such as the Covington Newton County Recreation Commission, the Kiwanis Club of Covington, Literacy Volunteers of Newton County, the board of directors of the Newton County Chamber of Commerce, Smart Growth Newton County, the Newton County Board of Health, and the Newton County Community Foundation, among others.

She was also a member of a number of educational organizations, such as the Newton County Special Education Advisory Committee, the Newton County Association of Educators, the National Association of Educators, the Georgia Association of Educators, the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals, the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders and the Newton County Teachers Association.

Both are active members of Grace United Methodist Church in Covington.

Together, the two were recognized by the Newton County Chamber of Commerce in 2001 when they were presented the R.O. Arnold Award. In 2002, they received the I Have a Dream Award in honor of keeping the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alive.

To be inducted to the Newton Educator Hall of Fame, an educator must have served a minimum of 20 years in the Newton County School System as a classroom teacher, administrator, counselor or media specialist. The educator must be retired from the district for at least three years and have demonstrated proof of quality teaching, an evidence of impact or significant contributions to student success, and involvement outside the classroom, such as sponsor or extracurricular activities.
